This was a highly anticipated workshop for me as I haven't had the opportunity to update my knowledge of psychotropic medicine in the last few years. As a psychotherapist who has worked extensively with clients who require medication, I have a strong interest in understanding the effects of medicine and the collaboration between physician and therapist. I was pleased with Mr. Smith's presentation.
Mr. Thomas Smith is a licensed pharmacist and experienced therapist. His area of interest and advanced training is with clients with dissociative disorders. Unfortunately, he was unable to share more about treatment of this particular problem in relation to medication due to time constraint and scope of the presentation. His approach to medication was one of compassion and sensibility. He patiently walked the group through various classes of medications that are currently on the market. His presentation seemed designed for the therapist who has little background in the science of medicine. I find it particularly helpful to understand the considerations behind each choice of medication in the context of the individual client's circumstances. It enhances my ability to work with my clients when I have a good understanding and appreciation of what their drug regimen is doing or is expected to do.
The presenter emphasized the importance of obtaining information regarding a client's medication history early on in the counseling process, preferably as soon as rapport is developed. He also suggests going over pertinent parts of the history during sessions as treatment material. He was kind enough to give permission for the use of a questionnaire he has developed.
I highly recommend this workshop to any therapist who is interested in psychotropic medication.
